Todd's Son Co-Host's the Show in Honor of Father's Day

Todd Jones reviews

Transcript:
Thank you for listening to Real Estate Radio Los Angeles. I'm your host, Todd Jones. First thing is first, I would like to wish all of the fathers a very Happy Father's Day. I hope you have some fun plans for today and take good care of yourself, and hopefully your kids will do something nice for you. I would also like to wish my father a Happy Father's Day. He's in Texas, but he'll be listening to me online at toddjonesradio.com. Howdy, Dad? Happy Father's Day. And since it's Father's Day, I have something special planned. I thought I would do something a little different in our first segment which I know you're going to enjoy. I've mentioned in the past that my son, Liam, helps me here in the studio, and I've asked him to step in front of the mic and be my special guest on Father's Day.
Thank you, Dad.
Today is Father's Day, and I'm a father of two sons, Liam and Nico. Nico is 10 years old and hasn't been able to come into the studio with me yet, but Liam has been here for every show. As a tribute to all fathers out there, I wanted to bring my son on today to say a few words. Liam is 14 and will be starting high school in the fall. Can't believe he's already starting high school. He is an extremely talented musician. He plays to the guitar - electric and acoustic - the piano, and he creates music on his computer with two different programs. One is called Ableton Live and one is called ProTools. He's also a regular volunteer at church, playing music for the youth and volunteering in the church office. It's my great pleasure to welcome my oldest son, Liam, to the show. Liam, welcome to Real Estate Radio Los Angeles.
Thank you for having me.
I was thinking, if I would have interviewed you just six months ago, we would've heard a totally different Liam [laughter]. His voice has changed quite a bit in the last six months.
It has [laughter].
Very good. You have a nice radio voice now. First thing I want to ask you is, do you have a message you would like to give the sons and daughters out there about Father's Day?
Yeah, definitely. Basically, I would encourage every son or daughter to take a moment to appreciate their father and the things that they do for you because some moments in life can't be brought back. It's good to savor them.
That's nice. So, savor the moments. I like that. Do you do a lot of savoring with us?
Yes, I do [chuckles].
He's just saying that because I put him on the radio [chuckles]. Actually, we do do a lot of fun things together like-- sometimes we have fun, like hiking, which we'll get to in a minute. But sometimes, Liam and his brother do get stuck with me when I'm working. Sometimes they have to come when I'm meeting a termite guy or when I have to run to the office. They've even helped me show a few of my listings when my clients can only meet after hours. So Liam, can you think of any fun times when we went to look at some of the houses?
I can. There was this one time - and it's definitely in my memory - we went to see this really cool house. It was like a Smart house. And basically, you had to have your-- you could put your fingerprint. That's how you opened the door. And it was this glass door and it would just slide open. I thought it was really cool.
That was pretty cool, right? Smart technology house. You don't see that every day. It beats the old key and key chain [chuckles]. And sometimes-- this is kind of funny because as you know, kids can say the darnedest things. So sometimes I have to go to a house and I just don't have a choice, and my clients are fine with it when my kids show up. It's not all the time, it's just every once in a while. But we might be on the way to the house and my clients are buying a fixer. And they know it's a fixer and they know that it needs some work. But I had to have a little talk with my kids ahead of time. I'm like, "Let's just keep all opinions to yourself, please." We don't want to say the darnedest thing in front of our clients. They tend to be pretty good and enjoy it. Let me ask you this, Liam, what are your thoughts? Are you going to become a realtor like your dad?
I don't think so, no. I'm leaning toward the music industry, over there.
So, you could be a singing realtor? Maybe that could be a--
I could be.
A new niche. Let me ask you another question because this might give some good ideas to people that have kids or even if they don't have kids. In fact, on my next show, we're going to have the author of a book called The Secret Stairs. It's called Secret Stairs Los Angeles and it's about hidden staircases and it's a really fun book. I and my wife have taken Liam and Nico on some of these hikes, and it's a lot of fun. We walk around, you get good exercise because you may not know this, but there are a lot of staircases in LA. Some of them are like 80 steps, 100 steps. It's very cool.
I think the biggest one we did was like 180.
And the book tells you how many steps, right?
Uh-huh.
And then we like to count and verify that it's correct.
That's hard.
It gives you a little motivation to get to the top, right?
Yeah.
Who always wins?
I do.
Yes. I let him win. He's a lot younger than me so that's okay if he wins. So, some other fun things that we do that have to do with hiking is whenever we go on family vacations. What's been your favorite hike that we've done?
I think it was Crystal Falls.
Crystal Falls, where was that?
Yosemite.
Do you remember how long that hike took?
It took a long, long time. I think my stepmom was about to give out. She was about to just sit down and take a nap.
But watching a then 9-year-old and 13-year-old be able to pull it off motivated her, right?
Yeah. And she started-- she'd used to like, "I just want to get it over with," and she started her walking really fast.
Yeah, that was beautiful. That takes several hours to do. The important thing I want to wish everyone out there is just have a Happy Father's Day, and savor your moments. I always tell people when I see that they're about to have a child, or they have a new baby-- this is a totally non-real estate related thing. It's just a word of advice that I wanted to give. I always tell them to savor every moment of it. A lot of people are like, "I can't wait till I don't have to change diapers anymore." Or, "I can't wait till they start walking, or I don't have to carry them around." Or, "I can't wait till they can go to the bathroom by themselves." Or whatever it may be. But the next thing you know, they're going to be grown, and want to spend time with their friends, and not you. So I just always encourage everyone, savor every moment of being a parent - whether you're a mom, or a dad, stepmom, stepdad, either one - and just really enjoy the ride. Because before you know it, it's going to be over. Liam, thank you very much for your words. You never have a lack of something to say. I appreciate having you on the show.
Thank you very much for having me. [music]
